I guess I'd still play it over New Island, but I'd recommend looking elsewhere for your Yoshi fix. The level design alone kills whatever good will I have towards the game, and everything else I've mentioned is just the cherry on top. I have a lot of nostalgia for it, and I can applaud it for trying to forge its own distinct identity instead of shamelessly rehashing the first title, but the game simply isn't polished. The camera uses that annoying gimmick DS games liked to do where the camera takes up two screens at once, except it's not even programmed properly, so there's a huge gap in the middle of the screen you can't see. I can't really articulate it well, but Yoshi's control in this game just feels off, like he can do everything he could in the original game, it just feels worse. There's no attempt at making a cohesive world, World 2 is simultaneously a jungle and a desert, World 4 has you going down from the sky and onto a snowy mountain (rather than the other way around), and World 5 is just World 1's aesthetic with a sepia filter until 5-5, when it suddenly becomes a gloomy lava world. The graphics rival Super Paper Mario in terms of how much they resemble a 2008 Newgrounds game, every sprite that wasn't recolored from the original game looks like it was drawn by a completely different artist. I still can't believe I had the patience to 100% this shit back in the day.Īnd that's not even getting into my other gripes with the game. Imagine everything I've just complained about dialed up to 11, including, but not limited to, an instakill hazard deliberately placed to fuck over people who don't have the level memorized to a T, levels with more spikes than a Sonic the Hedgehog OC, mazes that are even more of a convoluted mess, levels long enough to warrant over 5 checkpoints, and this monstrosity. The Extra and Secret levels are literally just kaizo levels that Nintendo officially licensed. From World 4 onwards the level design becomes flat-out bad, with unpredictable stage hazards that can off-screen you at any time, levels that are downright claustrophobic, insta-kill hazards spammed all over without a second thought, convoluted maze levels that never fucking end, and insanely cryptic hidden collectables (there's a segment in 5-7 that requires you to stand in place and wait for a Fly Guy carrying a Red Coin to spawn). It's nothing impossible, but I'd put it roughly on par with Worlds 5 and 6 of the original game in terms of difficulty, and in terms of length they were getting far longer than any of the original's levels. Then World 3 comes along, and the difficulty spikes dramatically. Nothing remarkable, but it's serviceable, and I found myself having a decent bit of fun. The level design is pretty reasonable for Worlds 1 and 2. After rage-quitting halfway through World 5's Secret Level, I now remember why I put the game down in the first place. So naturally, I decided to revisit the game to see how fun it still is.
